Severe Plus Air Quality and Restrictions in Delhi-NCR’s GRAP-IV as the Delhi AQI Rises

By 11 a.m. on Monday, the Delhi Air Quality Index (AQI) had increased to a severe plus level of 487, meaning that the air quality in the city had gotten dangerously bad. According to CPCB data, this was one of the worst air pollution events in November in recent memory, with PM2.5 levels more than 20 times the WHO standard at 354 micrograms per cubic meter and PM10 levels 12 times higher. In order to address the pollution situation, authorities in Delhi have put GRAP-IV measures into place as it gets worse.

GRAP-IV in Delhi-NCR: Severe Plus Air Quality and Health Impacts

Experts are warning about the severe air pollution health risks as smog in Delhi blankets the city. The Delhi AQI today continues to hover in the ‘severe’ category, with some areas like Dwarka AQI and Mundka AQI reporting levels close to 500. Stubble burning in nearby regions exacerbates Delhi’s pollution levels, significantly contributing to the worsening air quality.

The toxic air has raised concerns regarding health impacts of air pollution, with an urgent need to take preventive measures.

GRAP-IV Restrictions and Measures

Under GRAP-IV in Delhi-NCR, restrictions have been enforced due to severe pollution levels. These include a ban on construction and demolition activities, except for essential projects. Authorities restrict diesel-powered vehicles (BS-IV and below) unless they are transporting essential goods.

Additionally, until further notice, all schools—aside from those in grades 10 and 12—will offer online courses. As part of the Delhi Air Pollution Control Measures under GRAP Stage 4, these actions are intended to reduce air pollution.

Monitoring the Most Polluted Areas

The most polluted areas in Delhi currently include Najafgarh, Rohini, and Pooth Khurd, with AQI levels reaching extreme figures like 1500. Monitoring stations across Delhi report the AQI between 1300 and 1600, placing it in the ‘hazardous’ category. This makes it one of the most polluted episodes for this time of year.

Weather and Air Quality Outlook

Meteorological conditions, including low wind speeds and fog in Delhi, are worsening the situation. The Delhi weather and air quality forecast predicts that the AQI will remain in the ‘Severe’ or ‘Very Poor’ category for the coming days. The IMD has issued a yellow alert, expecting dense fog in the morning and shallow fog later in the day, further trapping pollutants and preventing their dispersal.

This unprecedented level of pollution highlights the need for ongoing vigilance and stringent action to improve Delhi’s air quality and mitigate the severe health risks posed by air pollution in India.
